In 2003, four friends who met while studying at university decided they would actively try to make a difference in the community after they graduated. They wanted to make the largest difference possible in society and believed that education would provide the best avenue to open opportunities in a child’s life. From this concept, The Melbourne Foundation was founded in 2006.
Our selection process is unique amongst scholarship providers. Our potential candidates must undertake a rigorous selection process comprising aptitude tests, a written application, and a series of interviews with both candidates and their families.
Through our scholarship program, The Melbourne Foundation has fostered the intellectual and cultural development of Australian school children, providing transformational opportunities to talented, driven, yet financially disadvantaged students.
The Melbourne Foundation’s scholarships were initially funded by its founders. In August 2012, The Melbourne Foundation was endorsed as a Deductible Gift Recipient and started receiving external donations. Now, The Melbourne Foundation’s scholarships are primarily funded through contributions from:
- The management of the Foundation
- Syndicates of individuals who come together to sponsor a scholarship. For example, syndicates may be formed by parents of current students at a school, ex-students of a school, or like-minded friends
- Philanthropic organisations
- Other members of the public
The Melbourne Foundation offers scholarships to male and female students for entry into year 9 at private schools in the Melbourne metropolitan area.
